Justice Dipankar Datta

Justice Dipankar Datta was born on 9th February, 1965 to Mira and Justice (Retd.) Salil Kumar Datta in Calcutta. After graduating from Hazra Law College, University of Calcutta, in 1989, he enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of West Bengal in the same year. In his wide-ranging practice, for around sixteen years, before the Calcutta High Court, other High Courts, tribunals, and also the Supreme Court of India, he represented various litigants including the State of West Bengal, Union of India and multiple statutory authorities. he was also a guest lecturer on Constitutional Law in the University College of Law, University of Calcutta between 1996-97 and 1999-2000.
He was elevated as a permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court on 22nd June, 2006 and was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on 28th April, 2020. After more than two and half years at the helm of the Bombay High Court, he assumed charge as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 12th December 2022. He is due to demit office on 8th February, 2030.
