Justice Shree Chandrashekhar
Enrolled as an Advocate with the Delhi State Bar Council on 9th December 1993, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar started his legal practice in Delhi on both the Criminal and Civil side. As a practicing advocate, he was appointed Standing Counsel for the State of Jharkhand and the All India Council for Technical Education before the Supreme Court of India and represented the Bihar State Housing Board, Bihar State Pollution Control Board, Jharkhand State Electricity Board, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, among others.
He was elevated to the Bench as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Jharkhand on 17th January 2013 and confirmed as a Permanent Judge on 27th June 2014. He was appointed Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jharkhand on 29th December 2023. As Judge-in-Charge of the Jharkhand Judicial Academy, he organized various State and National Level Conferences on contemporary issues, such as the National Conference on Mediation in Family Courts, the Conference on ‘Women’s Right to Property – Road to Empowerment,’ and the State Level Colloquium on ‘Anti-Human Trafficking.’ Reflecting his commitment to collaborative exchange with International Institutions, the Academy also hosted ‘Adjudicating Terrorism Cases – Faculty Development II’ with the National Judicial Academy, CEELI Institute and the Federal Judicial Centre, U.S.A.; the East Zone-I Regional Conference on ‘Contemporary Judicial Developments and Strengthening Justice System through Law and Technology’; and the National Judicial Academy Training Programme for Bangladesh Judges and Judicial Officers (Phase-II). The Academy produced several valuable publications and research materials, such as, ‘Charter of Patients’ Rights: Changing Global Trends’ (2021), Legal Education and Professional Development of Future Judges: Role of Law School, Handbook on Cybercrimes Awareness, and Reading Material on the Code of Civil Procedure (Vol. I) etc.
Justice Shree Chandrashekhar was also Executive Chairperson of the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA), where he was instrumental in introducing pre-litigation Mediation as part of the National Lok Adalats in Jharkhand. Under his leadership, JHALSA launched ‘Man ka Milan Pakhwara’ under which various activities were organised by the DLSAs. A ‘Colloquium on Protecting Child Rights: Legal Perspective and Training’ was organised in association with the Government of Jharkhand and the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation. During this period, Legal Aid Clinics were established in Law Colleges across Jharkhand. Medical Dispensary was set up at JHALSA and the District Court at Ranchi. He also oversaw implementation of revised Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedure for support to Poor Prisoners, by providing the District-Level financial assistance for depositing fines of convicted prisoners up to Rs.40,000/- per case. He played a key role in the construction of the New High Court Complex at Ranchi, one of the finest in the Country.
Justice Shree Chandrashekhar was transferred to the High Court of Rajasthan, where he took the oath of office as a Judge on 5th July 2024. He served as Executive Chairperson of the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority, focusing on initiatives such as ‘Srijan ki Suraksha’, a joint initiative addressing environmental conservation and empowerment of the girl child.
Justice Shree Chandrashekhar was later transferred to the High Court of Judicature at Bombay and took the oath of office on 21st July 2025. He briefly served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court from 29th August 2025 till 4th September 2025. There he served initially as Director of the Maharashtra Judicial Academy, and later as its Chairperson and Patron-in-Chief until his elevation to the Supreme Court of India. He was appointed 49th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and took the oath of office on 5th September 2025. As Patron-in-Chief of the Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority, he established Permanent Lok Adalats in each district of Maharashtra. During this period, on 5th November 2025, foundation stone was laid for the new 30-acre AI-enabled Bombay High Court complex. As the Chief Justice, he introduced ‘श्री App’, a dedicated digital platform facilitating seamless protocol coordination for sitting and former judges of the Supreme Court of India, Bombay High Court and other High Courts.
Justice Shree Chandrashekhar was nominated as a member of Judges’ Inquiry Committee constituted in relation to Justice Yashwant Varma, and was also a member of the National Court Management Systems (NCMS), for which he prepared ‘A Handbook for the Judges’, now kept in the library of the National Judicial Academy.
On 27th May 2026, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his elevation to the Apex Court, and he took the oath of office on 2nd June 2026.
